November 5 — The Democrats' sweeping victory in both chambers of the U.S. Congress has driven sector rotation in Asian stock markets. On Thursday, memory chip giant SK Hynix fell over 9% and Samsung Electronics dropped 7%, dragging South Korea's KOSPI index down more than 5%. Meanwhile, automakers such as Toyota and Honda rose about 5%, pushing Japan's TOPIX index up 1%, while consumer companies like Uniqlo parent Fast Retailing also saw gains. As Democrats leveraged voters' concerns about artificial intelligence to gain support in the midterm elections, market worries about potential delays in data center construction intensified. Beyond adopting defensive strategies amid the tech stock selloff, investors rushed to buy auto stocks, betting that automakers could benefit if U.S. President Trump eases tariff policies. Tim Waterer, Chief Market Analyst at KCM Trade, said capital continues to flow out of the chipmaker sector, with a clear rotation trend evident, and the market is punishing areas most vulnerable to potential regulatory headwinds — with the semiconductor industry being one of them.
