Intel’s stock price has recently suffered a historic plunge: it fell 45% cumulatively in October, marking the company’s worst monthly performance on record; on the last trading day of October, it plummeted 29% in a single day, the largest one-day drop since the 1970s; on the first trading day of November, it fell another 8%. This round of decline was mainly triggered by a profit warning—Intel expects revenue for this quarter to be $1 billion to $2 billion lower than analysts’ expectations, mainly due to weak demand in the PC market and high costs of components such as memory, while the PC business still contributes about half of the company’s revenue. Although the data center business continues to grow, insufficient production capacity has forced the company to shift part of the capacity at its Oregon plant from the advanced 18A process to the Intel 3 process to increase server CPU supply, raising external concerns about its advanced process capacity and foundry delivery capabilities. Some academics have warned that if Intel cannot provide sufficient capacity beyond meeting its own needs, it will be difficult for it to become a trustworthy foundry supplier. CEO Chen Liwu said that he expects to announce several foundry customers in the next two quarters, and that customer expansion progress will be key to its foundry business transformation. Multiple institutions have downgraded Intel’s rating or suggested reviewing holdings in related areas.
