United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) has secured a significant photonic integrated circuit (PIC) order from Celestial Photonics—a company backed by Zhongji Innolight and Tencent Ventures. The initial order comprises 10,000 wafers to be manufactured at UMC's Singapore fab, with potential follow-on orders. The unit price is seven times that of conventional CMOS processes.
