On October 19, South Korean financial media outlet ChosunBiz reported that "Arkwood" Cathie Wood expressed her views on the recent volatility in the South Korean stock market caused by foreign capital selling on the 16th. She believes that the withdrawal of foreign capital is not due to a deterioration in market fundamentals, but rather the impact of algorithmic trading is more significant. Regarding the sharp decline in South Korean semiconductor stocks, Wood pointed out that the current period is a good time to buy. She explained that when memory chip stock prices peaked and then declined in June, the South Korean won also rose to a record high against the US dollar. The combination of falling stock prices and exchange rate factors triggered a surge in mechanical algorithmic trading. Additionally, Wood believes that the recent correction in memory chip stocks is a reaction to the previous rapid price increases, as the soaring unit prices of memory chips have led to a decline in retail sales of electronic devices, an impact that is already reflected in stock prices. Today, the South Korean Kospi index opened more than 3% lower but subsequently recovered somewhat, ending slightly down at the time of writing.
