On October 13th, analysts E.T. Lee and D.E. Lee from KB Securities highlighted that, although profit forecasts for semiconductor firms continue to soar amid the AI craze, the recent downturn in South Korean chip stocks could be a sign of investors' uncertainty regarding the longevity of earnings. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have seen their shares drop for five straight trading sessions. In their report, the analysts noted that investors still perceive semiconductors as a cyclical sector and harbor doubts about their capacity to maintain profitability. They pointed out that while supply constraints can fuel profit growth during a boom, the relaxation of these constraints might result in an excess of inventory and overinvestment. Furthermore, sectors such as diagnostic kits, face masks, toilet paper, and container shipping have exhibited similar patterns in the aftermath of the pandemic.
