On October 8, news surfaced that the U.S. Department of Defense is set to offer chip manufacturer Wolfspeed (WOLF.N) a conditional senior secured loan of up to $1.5 billion, to be disbursed over a 30-year term. This financial support aims to bolster the domestic production of silicon carbide materials and wide-bandgap power devices within the United States. As per the ongoing negotiations, the terms of the deal stipulate that Wolfspeed will grant the U.S. Department of Defense warrants. These warrants will empower the department to acquire up to 7.5% of the company's shares in installments.

Wolfspeed, which faced bankruptcy in July of the previous year due to production challenges at a pivotal silicon carbide wafer factory, has expressed its intention to utilize the funds for expanding the production of silicon carbide materials and power devices. This expansion will cater specifically to the telecommunications, aerospace, and defense sectors. Additionally, the company aims to strengthen its supply capabilities for materials essential to military communication systems. Following the public announcement of this proposed deal, Wolfspeed's stock price experienced a significant surge, jumping by over 28% in after-hours trading at one juncture.
