SK Hynix Kicks Off Construction of Memory Chip Plant in Japan

On September 28, reports surfaced indicating that SK Hynix has initiated the groundwork for constructing a memory chip factory in Japan's Tohoku region. This move came as a surprise, considering that just a month earlier, no definitive decision had been made regarding the project. At present, it is still uncertain whether the factory will be fully owned by SK Hynix or if it will be set up as a joint venture in collaboration with Kioxia. Nevertheless, this development clearly highlights SK Hynix's aspirations to make inroads into the Japanese market. Moreover, SK Hynix has recently urged its Korean component suppliers to ramp up their supply volumes, in a bid to tackle the prevailing shortage of memory chips.
