At a time when artificial intelligence is widely regarded as a pivotal tool for revolutionizing semiconductor research and development, TSMC's co-CEO, Mark Liu, adopts a measured view regarding AI's capabilities. He notes that although AI has markedly improved the efficiency of chip design and software development, human engineers continue to be indispensable in the development of next-generation, sophisticated manufacturing processes. Liu highlights that present AI technology is still unable to overcome physical constraints, such as the scarcity of high-performance equipment, and presents risks of data breaches. At present, TSMC does not consider AI to be capable of effectively aiding in the R&D of state-of-the-art chip processes like A14 and A10, as AI currently lacks tangible utility in advanced chip design scenarios.
