Huawei Unveils Industry’s Pioneering Ascend 960 Super Node with NPO Technology

At Huawei Full Connect 2026, Wang Tao unveiled a series of groundbreaking milestones: Over 1,000 sets of Ascend 910C super nodes have already been deployed, and the Ascend 950 has successfully achieved commercial-scale operation. The development progress of Ascend 960 has surpassed initial projections, with its two variants—960DT and 960PR—scheduled for release in the first and third quarters of 2027, respectively. Looking ahead, Huawei plans to introduce a new generation of chips on an annual basis, including the 970 and 980 models. Leveraging Ascend 960 and Hi-ONE technology, Huawei has engineered the industry’s first Ascend 960 super node that incorporates NPO (Near-Package Optical) technology. This innovative node can house up to 4,096 cards, delivering robust computing and storage capabilities while dramatically cutting power consumption and boosting reliability. Moreover, the openEuler operating system has been installed on over 20 million systems, securing the top spot in China’s server operating system market. The global developer community on the Kunpeng platform has swelled to more than 4.16 million, supported by over 7,200 ecosystem partners. External developers on the CANN platform constitute 61% of the total, with monthly active community users exceeding 5,200. Ascend has also established itself as China’s first computing power platform available for direct installation from the official PyTorch website.
