Axelera AI Unveils Its Second-Generation AIPU Chip, Europa, Boasting 629 TOPS of AI Computing Prowess

Recently, Axelera AI, a Dutch chip startup, officially launched Europa, its second-generation Artificial Intelligence Processing Unit (AIPU) chip. This System-on-Chip (SoC) integrates eight advanced AI processing cores, delivering an impressive 629 Tera Operations Per Second (TOPS) of AI computing power. Additionally, it is equipped with 16 RISC-V vector processing cores, enhancing its versatility and performance. Europa supports a range of data formats, including INT4, INT8, and INT16, and incorporates a substantial 128MB of on-chip L2 cache to ensure swift data access and processing.

Furthermore, Europa is designed to support 256-bit Low Power Double Data Rate 5 (LPDDR5) memory, providing high-speed data transfer capabilities. It also offers four PCIe Gen4 lanes, facilitating seamless integration with various computing systems. Despite its powerful performance, Europa operates at a remarkably low power consumption of just 45W, making it an energy-efficient choice for AI applications.

The chip will be available in two formats: as a standalone chip and as a PCIe Accelerator in Card (AIC) form, catering to diverse customer needs. Notably, when comparing unit power consumption, Europa's Token throughput is six times that of traditional GPU solutions. Moreover, at equivalent price points, its Token throughput surpasses that of the best competing products by more than eightfold, solidifying its position as a leader in the AI chip market.
