Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the two prominent memory semiconductor behemoths in South Korea, have made it official: they have turned down a substantial advance payment scheme put forth by the state-owned Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). Based on an official response document released by the office of Lee Cheol-gyu, a member of the Climate, Energy, Environment, and Labor Committee in the South Korean National Assembly, these two semiconductor giants, following an internal assessment, have declared their inability to accept the proposition of prepaying 25 trillion won (equivalent to roughly $18.7 billion) in electricity charges to facilitate the development of transmission networks.
