Developers from the Asahi Linux project have successfully enabled the Linux kernel to soon support the USB4 protocol on devices powered by M1, M2, and M3 chips. This functionality had previously been implemented in the downstream code of Asahi Linux, and this submission aims to promote the formal integration of the relevant drivers into the mainline Linux kernel. Since its launch in 2021, the project has achieved Linux system compatibility for the entire M1/M2 Mac lineup and expanded compatibility through the Fedora Asahi Remix distribution. On the technical front, the project has developed hardware drivers through reverse engineering, supporting basic functions such as CPU scheduling, memory management, NVMe storage, and Wi-Fi 6. However, modules like GPU acceleration and audio output are still under development. The addition of USB4 protocol support will enhance peripheral expandability, providing more complete Linux ecosystem support for Apple Silicon devices.
