Samsung has globally launched its latest memory solution tailored for on-device AI applications—LPDDR-PIM. The company recently shared the architecture, specifications, and verification results of LPDDR5X-PIM at an academic conference. This innovative product has already secured a Next-Generation Memory Award. PIM (Processing-in-Memory) technology enables certain computations to be performed directly within the memory, minimizing data transfer. This approach not only accelerates processing speed but also reduces power consumption. According to tests, LPDDR5X-PIM processes the Llama 3.1 model 2.3 times faster than standard LPDDR5X. Its token processing rate per second reaches three times that of existing solutions. Given the growing trend toward compact and efficient AI models, Samsung has expanded its PIM technology—previously developed for HBM (High Bandwidth Memory)—to LPDDR memory, which is widely used in mobile devices. The new LPDDR-PIM solution demonstrates strong compatibility, and Samsung is actively fostering ecosystem development. The company has also initiated standardization efforts for LPDDR6-PIM, marking a significant shift in memory technology: from mere data storage to active participation in computation.
