At Hot Chips 2026, IBM unveiled its dual-architecture processor for the next-generation IBM Z and LinuxONE systems, marking the first public reveal of processor technology since its strategic collaboration with Arm in April this year. Each core of the processor natively supports both IBM Z and Arm instruction sets, enabling parallel operation of software environments from both sides. Built on a 2nm process technology, it features 11 high-performance cores with clock speeds exceeding 5.7GHz, and integrates an AI inference accelerator, on-chip DPU, and large-capacity cache. Under Arm workloads, the processor maintains the original security features of IBM Z. This collaboration enables Arm technology to enter mission-critical system domains such as finance, helping it build a broader ecosystem in the traditional mainframe market.
