On August 21, the board of directors at Samsung Electronics greenlit the 2026 shareholder return initiative, projected to range between 90 trillion and 110 trillion won (equivalent to roughly $65 billion to $80 billion). This move sets a new benchmark as the most substantial shareholder return program in the annals of Korean corporate history, eclipsing the previous high of 20.3 trillion won established in 2020 by nearly fivefold. The program encompasses a substantial cash dividend payout of around 30 trillion won in the third quarter. The specifics of the remaining return mechanisms and their magnitudes will be deliberated and finalized by the board in January 2027, contingent upon the company's 2026 financial performance. These could encompass additional cash dividends, stock repurchases, and share cancellations. Furthermore, Samsung Electronics has earmarked approximately 15 trillion won for share buybacks aimed at bolstering employee incentive schemes.
