On August 12, emerging market stocks rose today, with Asian chip stocks standing out as stellar earnings from artificial intelligence infrastructure companies reignited market enthusiasm for tech stocks. Against the backdrop of upcoming U.S. inflation data to be released later today, emerging market currencies showed mixed performance. The MSCI Emerging Market Stock Benchmark Index climbed 1.1%, with notable contributions from Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and TSMC. Meanwhile, the benchmark index for emerging market currencies also edged up 0.1%, buoyed by the depreciation of the U.S. dollar against most major currencies. The South African rand and Hungarian forint led the gains, while the Indonesian rupiah and South Korean won lagged behind. The team of Luis Costa, strategist at Citigroup, pointed out in a report that U.S. inflation data is currently the primary focus for traders, while earnings releases from AI companies continue to influence market risk appetite. Additionally, they cautioned that the risk of a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz remains noteworthy.
