On August 5, South Korean media reported that Josephine Loo, an industry analyst at the French market research firm Yole Group, shared insights at the 2026 Future Memory and Storage Conference held in California on the 4th (local time). Loo stated that with substantial investments from industry giants such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, South Korea is poised to maintain its global leadership in the memory chip market until at least 2031. Loo highlighted that South Korea aims to double its wafer production capacity over the next five years, with both Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix ramping up their investment endeavors. As these two companies concurrently expand production capacity and drive technological advancements in next-generation DRAM (including high-bandwidth memory, or HBM) and NAND technologies, South Korea's competitive edge is expected to endure. Furthermore, the demand for HBM is anticipated to surge, extending beyond Nvidia's graphics processors to encompass AI accelerators independently developed by major tech firms like Google.
