As reported by interestingengineering, SpaceX and NVIDIA have made a joint announcement regarding their collaboration to create the 'Starmind AI1' satellite computing payload. This innovative payload will incorporate NVIDIA's cutting-edge Vera CPU and Rubin GPU, empowering it to handle AI workloads directly in low-Earth orbit and attain computing capabilities on par with those of data centers in space. NVIDIA asserts that the AI processing prowess of its Space-1 Vera Rubin module surpasses that of the H100 GPU by 25 times, enabling it to execute large language models and sophisticated foundational models directly in orbit, as well as process real-time data streams from space-based equipment. SpaceX envisions constructing an orbital network comprising one million satellites, interconnected through high-speed laser links, to form a distributed space AI supercomputer. This ambitious project aims to substantially augment computing capabilities far beyond those of Earth-bound data centers.
