On July 29, 2026, UMC's Board of Directors approved an investment plan totaling US$4.6 billion (NT$148.68 billion) aimed at enhancing production capacity. The plan includes expanding the cleanroom facilities at its Singapore site to increase silicon photonics production capacity, as well as initiating the shell construction of a new factory in the Tainan Science Park in Taiwan, which will serve as the foundation for future Phase 7 and Phase 8 facilities. Through this dual-track expansion, UMC aims to meet customers' immediate demands while strategically positioning itself for long-term growth in high-potential areas such as AI and edge computing.
