German automotive parts and chip manufacturer Bosch announced on Monday that its first semiconductor plant in the United States has commenced trial production and reached a $225 million agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities for silicon carbide chips. Previously, to avoid high tariffs and geopolitical risks, some automakers and parts suppliers had expanded their local production in the U.S. during the Trump administration. Bosch acquired the TSI Semiconductors chip plant in Roseville, California, in 2023 and invested $2 billion (including funds from the U.S. Department of Commerce) in its renovation, with full commercial production expected to commence later this year.
