On June 29, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung emphasized the urgency for South Korea to expedite its strategic deployment in critical sectors such as semiconductor chips, AI data centers, and embodied AI, aiming to secure a competitive advantage. The government plans to leverage both public and private sector resources to construct a comprehensive AI ecosystem and propel the development of semiconductor manufacturing bases currently under construction. Lee Jae-myung highlighted that the existing power and water supply capacities at semiconductor industry clusters in Yongin and Pyeongtaek are approaching their maximum thresholds. To address this, South Korea must broaden the geographical spread of AI data centers across the nation, identify fresh investment destinations, enhance the industrial data acquisition and utilization framework, and foster the growth of the embodied AI ecosystem. Simultaneously, he underscored the importance of fostering regional equilibrium and mitigating the challenge of over-concentration of resources in the capital region.
