On May 26th, Moscow State University unveiled the results of its esteemed MSU Hardware Video Coding Competition. Tencent’s self-developed codec chip, ‘Canghai,’ emerged as the undisputed leader, securing the top position across all evaluation metrics—SSIM, PSNR, and VMAF—spanning speed tiers from 30 to 240fps. The development of the Canghai chip commenced in 2019, with plans for mass production and widespread deployment set to commence in 2023. To date, Tencent Cloud and its internal platforms have deployed over 100,000 units of the Canghai V1 chip. Tencent also announced that the next-generation Canghai V2 chip has been successfully activated and is now entering the mass production phase, with comprehensive online services anticipated to launch in the latter half of 2026.
