On May 27, disclosed documents indicated that Samsung Electronics is set to invest 39 trillion Vietnamese dong (roughly equivalent to US$1.5 billion) in Vietnam for the establishment of a semiconductor testing plant. This new facility will be situated in an industrial zone located 60 kilometers to the north of Hanoi. Construction commenced in April, with production slated to kick off in November 2027. This will mark Samsung's inaugural foray into chip testing in Vietnam. The plant will primarily concentrate on traditional chip manufacturing. Although these chips play a less significant role in the AI supply chain, there is presently a scarcity of mature memory chips due to major manufacturers pivoting towards AI chip production. As outlined in the environmental permit proposal, the new plant's annual production capacity will encompass 153.3 billion gigabits of DRAM chips and 255.6 billion gigabits of NAND flash memory chips. The investment initiative received the green light from Vietnamese authorities in March, and Samsung intends to earmark potential profits of up to approximately US$2.5 billion for the construction of a secondary plant. Insiders with knowledge of the situation revealed that since April, over 200 Samsung personnel have been stationed at the project site.
