On May 22, Bloomberg disclosed that Samsung Electronics managed to secure a preliminary accord with its largest labor union at the eleventh hour, thereby sidestepping a potentially devastating strike. This was achieved by allocating a greater share of the profits accrued from the AI boom among its workforce. As per the terms of the agreement, staff members within Samsung Electronics' Device Solutions division, which oversees the semiconductor operations, are anticipated to receive performance bonuses amounting to roughly 600 million Korean won by 2026. Nevertheless, this arrangement has not garnered unanimous approval among all employees. Specifically, those employed in the memory chip division are slated to receive bonuses that are 100 times higher than those awarded to their counterparts in other divisions. This glaring inequity in reward distribution has ignited a wave of internal discontent. Union members are scheduled to cast their votes on the preliminary salary agreement from 2 p.m. on May 22 until 10 a.m. on May 27. Should the vote receive the necessary endorsement, the planned strike will be averted.
