Samsung Electronics is currently navigating its most significant labor unrest in recent history, with more than 45,000 workers set to initiate an 18-day walkout starting May 21. This action follows a breakdown in negotiations over bonus distribution between labor representatives and management. The crux of the conflict centers on how to fairly distribute the financial gains from the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, with stark differences in opinion emerging between the memory and chip foundry divisions.

Profitability varies notably across Samsung’s various business segments, leading to significant disparities in bonus allocations. Employees within the memory chip division are set to receive substantially higher bonuses compared to their counterparts in the logic chip sector. The labor union is calling for the removal of the current 50% cap on annual bonuses and is advocating for the allocation of 15% of the company’s annual operating profits to the employee bonus pool.

Samsung, in response, contends that its logic chip operations are currently running at a loss and depend heavily on profits generated by the memory business to fund investments. The situation has already led to a noticeable exodus of talent, and the looming threat of a strike has sparked widespread concern. Analysts at JPMorgan predict that the impending strike could negatively impact Samsung’s operating profits and sales figures.

The chairman of Samsung’s board of directors has cautioned that the strike could potentially trigger a capital outflow, while the President of South Korea has described the union’s demands as 'excessive.' As of the latest updates, no resolution has been reached, and both sides remain at an impasse.
