The second round of mediation negotiations between the labor force and management at Samsung Electronics has ended in failure. In response, the labor union has declared that a comprehensive strike involving 50,000 workers will commence on May 21 and last for 18 days. This action is anticipated to result in losses amounting to roughly KRW 40 trillion (equivalent to approximately RMB 182.4 billion). The union's key demands include the elimination of the bonus cap and the allocation of 15% of the company's operating profits for employee bonuses. In contrast, management has proposed a profit-sharing scheme of 10%, along with a one-time compensation package. The potential strike could disrupt the supply of chips, lead to customer losses, and have repercussions for the South Korean economy. Consequently, there are indications that the government may consider employing emergency adjustment measures to intervene in the situation.
