On May 7, TrendForce released its most recent research findings on the wafer foundry sector, highlighting notable shifts in the global supply-demand dynamics for mature processes. Production Capacity Reduction on the Horizon: Beginning in the latter half of 2025, two industry giants in wafer foundry, TSMC and Samsung, are set to scale back their 8-inch production capacity. AI Server Demand Fuels Utilization: Concurrently, the burgeoning power management and energy requirements of AI servers are anticipated to propel the utilization rate of 8-inch capacity among the world's top ten wafer foundries to nearly 90% by 2026. Market Rebound in Sight: Both the utilization rates and foundry prices for 8-inch capacity have witnessed a resurgence. Additionally, mature 12-inch processes might also undergo order reallocations, a consequence of TSMC's planned production cuts. Stable Yet Precarious: Despite the current stability in the supply-demand equilibrium for mature 12-inch processes, TSMC's overflow of orders could lead secondary-tier foundries to propose price increases to their clients in the latter half of 2026, a move that could have medium to long-term implications.
