On March 30, reports indicated that SUMCO, a major Japanese player in the global silicon wafer manufacturing sector, has recently decided to postpone its plans for constructing new factories. Instead, the company will allocate its resources towards upgrading its current facilities and advancing cutting-edge process technologies. Due to this strategic shift, the subsidy provided by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has been substantially reduced from the initially projected 75 billion yen to 19.3 billion yen. SUMCO has clarified that, moving forward, its focus will be on technological enhancements and capacity optimization at its existing plants, including those in Imari City, Saga Prefecture. The company will also prioritize boosting the research, development, and production capabilities for silicon wafers tailored to the latest chip manufacturing processes.
