Server producer Supermicro has once again found itself at the center of public scrutiny, this time over export-related controversies involving China. Reports indicate that, over the past year, at least four Chinese universities have either purchased or sought to purchase Supermicro server systems integrated with NVIDIA A100 artificial intelligence chips. Notably, two of these universities have strong connections to the People's Liberation Army and have already been added to the U.S. government's Entity List, which imposes export restrictions. Furthermore, a co-founder of Supermicro and two other individuals are under suspicion for violating U.S. export control laws. They allegedly rerouted servers containing NVIDIA GPUs, valued at roughly $2.5 billion in total, to China through Southeast Asia. At present, two suspects have been apprehended, while a third remains at large. In response, Supermicro has suspended the implicated employees and severed ties with the relevant contractors, stressing that the company is fully cooperating with the ongoing government investigation.
