Previously, SATA 2.5-inch solid-state drives (SSDs) boasting a 16TB capacity were already in existence. At the Embedded World 2025 exhibition held in Germany, Exascend, a company from Taiwan, China, spearheaded the launch of the world's inaugural 16TB M.2 2280 solid-state drive—the PE4 series—and clinched the prestigious Best in Show award. This cutting-edge product adheres to the PCIe 4.0 and NVMe 1.4 standards, leverages 3D TLC NAND technology, and comes with a durability rating guaranteeing 5 years of use at 0.6 DWPD (Drive Writes Per Day). It offers an actual usable capacity of 15.36TB. Prior to this, AGI and Digilent had showcased 16TB M.2 SSD prototypes at Computex 2024 in Taipei; however, these products were not officially launched. The introduction of Exascend's PE4 series heralds a new era in large-capacity storage technology, delivering high-performance storage solutions tailored for AI edge computing and enterprise-level applications.
