A collaborative research team from Singapore, France, and the United States, drawing inspiration from topological photonics, has successfully engineered a compact on-chip antenna. This innovative antenna leverages microstructures embedded on the chip to efficiently emit terahertz signals, dramatically boosting data transmission rates and paving the way for the realization of 6G wireless communication. Recognizing that 6G will inevitably operate within the terahertz frequency spectrum in the future, the team acknowledged the challenges faced by antenna technology, noting the limitations inherent in traditional solutions. To overcome these hurdles, the researchers applied the principles of topological photonics to design a silicon chip, strategically arranging holes of varying sizes to precisely control terahertz radiation. This design enables the chip to double as an antenna, boasting a coverage range over 30 times greater than that of existing terahertz antennas and achieving data transmission rates hundreds of times faster. Furthermore, by employing a passive structural design, the antenna holds the promise of reducing costs and enhancing reliability. Looking ahead, the team aims to integrate the functionalities of a terahertz communication system onto a single chip. The development of on-chip terahertz antennas marks a significant step forward in addressing the limitations of traditional antennas, laying a solid foundation for the widespread adoption of 6G technology. However, the full realization of 6G still necessitates breakthroughs across multiple domains.
