Samsung Electronics has achieved a significant milestone in its pursuit of semiconductor localization within the United States. The company has obtained provisional authorization to initiate partial operations at its chip factory currently under construction in Taylor, Texas. This development represents a major leap forward in Samsung's strategy to manufacture cutting-edge AI chips for Tesla.
Samsung can now commence utilizing an area spanning roughly 88,000 square feet ahead of the original timeline. The plant is slated to begin mass production in the latter half of the year, starting with the production of AI5 chips, and subsequently transitioning to AI6 chips. Tesla's CEO has announced that the design of the AI5 chip is nearing completion, and a strategic roadmap has been formulated to expedite the design process.
Construction of the factory is proceeding according to schedule, with plans to test extreme ultraviolet lithography equipment next month. Partial construction is anticipated to be finalized by the year's end, with further expansion slated for 2028. In addition to these efforts, Samsung is actively seeking to broaden its customer base in the US, targeting a growth rate exceeding 130% in 2-nanometer chip orders this year.
Its rival, TSMC, is also ramping up its presence in the US market, contemplating the expansion of its Arizona facility and potentially participating in the production of Tesla's AI5 chips.
