An analysis firm has reported that TSMC has now emerged as the most significant risk factor within the global AI supply chain. Initially, conservative forecasts regarding AI demand, coupled with the CEO's prudent stance on hyperscale facility construction, resulted in inadequate early-stage investments. This lack of foresight subsequently led to supply shortages. The production capacity bottleneck has cascaded from chip manufacturers down to hyperscale cloud service providers at the lower end of the supply chain. Deliveries of chips to companies such as Microsoft have been impeded, potentially causing revenue losses amounting to billions of dollars. Moreover, the insufficient production capacity for advanced packaging technology stands as another major challenge. Despite TSMC having ramped up its capital expenditures, it still struggles to meet the market demand in the short run. Even with the presence of competitors, AI chip manufacturers are reluctant to switch foundries in the near term, as TSMC's supply chain ecosystem and its reputation for reliability are unparalleled and irreplaceable.
