According to reports, Amkor Technology has announced plans to shutter its Hakodate manufacturing plant in Shikabe Town, Hokkaido, Japan. The closure is anticipated to be finalized by December 2027, with the plant's operations being consolidated into Amkor's existing facility in Kyushu. The Hakodate plant, which currently employs 380 workers, primarily specializes in general semiconductor packaging for the automotive sector and other industries. Citing sluggish electric vehicle sales post-2023 and a broader downturn in automotive product demand, Amkor's Japanese subsidiary has indicated that the outlook for products manufactured at the Hakodate plant is expected to remain subdued, with little prospect of recovery. Consequently, production of certain products will cease, and the remaining production lines will be relocated to other facilities no later than the end of 2027.
