Recently, the research team helmed by Professor Wang Zhaohui from the Department of Chemistry at Tsinghua University has achieved a significant breakthrough in the realm of conjugated carbon materials. They have successfully synthesized, for the very first time, a crucial fragment of Schwarzite P192—a semi-tubular molecular fragment that incorporates two fully conjugated eight-membered rings. This structural fragment closely mirrors the negative curvature regions inherent to Schwarzite P192. Employing a high-tension chemical bond construction strategy, the team has laid a solid chemical groundwork for the subsequent controlled induction of Schwarzite growth and the development of novel carbon allotropes. The pertinent research findings have been published in the 'Journal of the American Chemical Society' and have been featured as the cover story.
