Initially, TSMC had no plans to invest in or construct a factory in the United States. However, under increasing pressure from the U.S. government, the company has progressively boosted its investment in recent years, with the latest committed investment reaching a staggering US$165 billion. Nevertheless, the U.S. has recently signaled its desire for TSMC to further escalate its investment to over US$200 billion. For TSMC, this commitment entails not only a massive financial outlay but also the transfer of cutting-edge manufacturing processes to its U.S. facilities. Originally, TSMC’s Phase I factory in the U.S. was slated to produce 5nm chips. Yet, following its completion at the end of last year, the process has been upgraded to 4nm.
