During the annual leadership election of the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR)—a globally renowned and premier security organization—a "security incident" unfolded. The IACR employed the Helios voting system for this crucial event, which necessitated the use of three private keys to decrypt the ballots.
Unfortunately, one of the designated trustees, Moti Yung, inadvertently misplaced his private key. This mishap led to the inability to decrypt thousands of submitted ballots, ultimately compelling the IACR to invalidate the entire election outcome.
In response to this setback, the IACR has officially declared the cancellation of the previous election. A fresh vote is slated to take place before December 20. Moreover, to prevent a recurrence of such an issue, the organization has revised its rules, reducing the number of private keys required for ballot decryption from three to two.
In the wake of these events, Moti Yung has tendered his resignation. His role has been assumed by his newly appointed colleague, Michel Abdalla.
