On e-commerce platforms such as Taobao or Xianyu, the enticing offer to purchase 128GB of Intel memory for a mere 128 yuan might seem like a steal, but it's fraught with numerous complications. This particular type of memory is Intel Optane Persistent Memory, which leverages 3D XPoint non-volatile storage technology. It is designed to serve as an "intermediate layer bridging the gap between traditional memory and hard drives," rather than functioning as a high-performance DRAM memory designed solely for speed. It cannot operate independently as system memory; instead, it must be paired with conventional memory and a hard drive to act as a caching acceleration device. Moreover, its latency is higher compared to that of DRAM memory. For enterprise users, although it provides a cost-effective solution to expand memory capacity, its performance enhancement is relatively limited for the average consumer. Furthermore, Optane memory imposes stringent platform requirements, necessitating specific motherboards and processors, along with intricate setup procedures, creating a substantial barrier to entry.
