On September 24, at a routine press conference, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that the Taiwan authorities are foolishly attempting to disrupt the stability of the global chip industry chain through political maneuvers. They are vainly, or rather, ill-advisedly trying to weaponize chips in a bid to counter the One-China Principle, a move that is bound to fail. He highlighted that China's chip industry has witnessed rapid development in recent years, with the production capacity of mature-process chips accounting for 28% of the global total. Furthermore, continuous breakthroughs have been achieved in the advanced-process chip sector. According to South African customs data, in 2024, chip exports from the Chinese mainland to South Africa were three times those from the Taiwan region. Guo Jiakun underscored that the actions of the Taiwan authorities would not have a substantial impact on South Africa's industry but would, instead, harm their own interests. China appreciates the South African government's efforts to facilitate the relocation of Taiwan institutions in South Africa and is eager to expand cooperation with South Africa across various fields, including chips, to foster greater progress in China-South Africa relations.
