On September 16, 2025, reports emerged indicating that American scientists have successfully developed a photonic chip. This innovative chip capitalizes on the synergistic (Changed from "collaborative operation" to "synergistic" for a more technical and natural-sounding expression in the context of chip technology) interplay between light and electricity to efficiently execute energy-intensive artificial intelligence tasks, such as image recognition. Notably, its energy efficiency surpasses that of traditional chips undertaking the same tasks by a factor of 10 or even more than 100 times. It is anticipated that this breakthrough will substantially reduce the power requirements of AI applications, thereby fostering the advancement of higher-performance AI systems and models. The pertinent research findings have been published in the esteemed journal Advanced Photonics.
