The U.S. administration has rescinded the authorization permitting TSMC's primary semiconductor fabrication plant in mainland China to import essential equipment, effectively revoking the 'Validated End-User' (VEU) designation for its Nanjing facility. This action mirrors the earlier withdrawal of VEU status for semiconductor plants operated by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix in mainland China. The TSMC Nanjing plant specializes in mature semiconductor manufacturing processes, notably 16nm and 28nm technologies, which are crucial for automotive electronics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and various other sectors. In response, TSMC has announced that it is evaluating the implications of this decision and implementing strategies to mitigate its impact. These efforts include engaging in dialogue with U.S. authorities to safeguard the uninterrupted operation of the Nanjing plant.
