British retail behemoth Tesco has recently initiated legal proceedings against Broadcom and its distributor, Computacenter, alleging a breach of the license agreement terms and seeking damages of up to £100 million (equivalent to roughly RMB 960 million). According to reports, in January 2021, Tesco procured perpetual licenses for two key VMware products, vSphere Foundation and Cloud Foundation, via Computacenter. Nevertheless, following its acquisition of VMware, Broadcom discontinued support services for these perpetual licenses, opting instead to advocate for a subscription-based model. Consequently, Tesco found itself unable to continue receiving software support and services. As a result, Tesco has named Broadcom and its distributor as co-defendants in the lawsuit, seeking compensation for the incurred losses. The case is currently undergoing further legal deliberation.
