The research team led by Associate Professor Zhang Liang from the School of Vehicle and Mobility and the Center for Combustion Energy at Tsinghua University has achieved a significant breakthrough in the intelligent design of low-iridium electrolysis water catalysts. Previously, the team had devised an innovative design approach that seamlessly integrates density functional theory calculations with Bayesian optimization strategies, effectively applied to the development of fuel cell catalysts. Now, they have extended this pioneering strategy into the realm of electrolysis water catalysts, crafting a high-performance catalyst with remarkably low iridium content. Through rigorous experimental validation, the team has confirmed the exceptional performance of this new catalyst. This accomplishment opens up a novel avenue for the design of proton exchange membrane electrolysis water catalysts that require minimal precious metal content.
