USAF Halts Collaborative SpaceX Project

On July 5, the United States Air Force (USAF) suspended its joint hypersonic rocket cargo transportation program with SpaceX. The program was designed to test reusable rocket landing vehicles capable of delivering 100 tons of cargo to any location worldwide within approximately 90 minutes. The USAF announced that it would undertake an environmental assessment of the project; however, the release of the preliminary report has been postponed due to opposition from environmental advocacy groups. Reports indicate that the project had been mired in controversy over its potential ecological impacts.
