Christian Klein, the CEO of the German tech giant SAP, recently asserted that Europe does not need to indulge in massive data center construction in the race for artificial intelligence supremacy. This stance stands in stark contrast to the views expressed by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang during his European tour last month. In an interview, Klein posed a pertinent question: "Is it truly necessary for us to construct five data centers equipped with state-of-the-art chips?" He underscored that while training large language models undeniably demands substantial energy and computational prowess, these models are swiftly becoming "commoditized," as exemplified by DeepSeek, which demonstrates that high efficacy can be achieved with reduced computational resources. Klein further contends that Europe should prioritize the practical application of AI rather than mindlessly adhering to the infrastructure investment pace set by the United States.
