To circumvent the stringent US export control restrictions, a Chinese AI company has devised a unique and innovative approach: dispatching four tech-savvy personnel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, armed with a substantial payload of hard drives essential for AI model training. Each individual carries an impressive total of 15 hard drives, each boasting a capacity of up to 80TB. Collectively, these drives encapsulate approximately 4.8 petabytes (PB) of data, more than sufficient to facilitate the training of numerous large-scale language models. Upon arrival in Malaysia, the tech personnel transport the data to a local data center, where they leverage advanced servers rented within the country to carry out the training process. Once the models are fully trained, they are safely transported back to China. While this method may seem unconventional and labor-intensive, it ingeniously sidesteps the direct importation of chips and servers, thereby mitigating the associated risks.
