As the graduation season of 2025 approached, Wang Zhi, a newly minted undergraduate from Fudan University, received a pre-thesis defense email from her institution. This email requested her to disclose in a formal commitment letter any utilization of AI tools in the preparation of her thesis. Prior to this directive, on November 28, 2024, the Academic Affairs Office of Fudan University had introduced a trial regulation, unequivocally barring the incorporation of AI tools in pivotal aspects of undergraduate thesis writing. This prohibition extends to research design, innovative method development, and the generation or alteration of raw data, experimental outcomes, and images. Furthermore, the regulation also forbids the direct production of main text sections, acknowledgments, and other contents via AI. Even the use of AI for language refinement and translation is strictly prohibited.
