A Florida judge has ruled that a lawsuit against Google and its associated chatbot service, Character AI, may proceed. Character AI is accused of being a contributing factor in the suicide of a teenager. In today's ruling, Judge Anne Conway determined that the defendants' attempt to invoke the First Amendment as a defense was insufficient to dismiss the lawsuit. The suit was filed by the deceased teenager's mother, who alleges that Character AI and its founders knowingly designed, operated, and marketed defective chatbots to children, ultimately leading to the teenager's death. Google is also named as a defendant, accused of providing financial, technical, and personnel support.
