The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York City is pioneering the use of artificial intelligence systems to proactively combat crime and hazardous behavior on subway platforms. Michael Kemper, the Chief Safety Officer of the MTA, announced that the agency is actively researching and piloting advanced technologies designed to detect potential issues or inappropriate actions. Should a person's behavior exhibit abnormalities, the system will trigger an alert, enabling security personnel or police to intervene promptly. Notably, this new system does not employ facial recognition technology; instead, it focuses solely on behavioral analysis. Prior to this initiative, the MTA had utilized AI surveillance software to monitor subway fare evasion.
