IBM has unveiled its latest mainframe computer, the z17, powered by the advanced Telum II processor. Engineered for over 250 AI applications, the z17 boasts an impressive capability to handle 450 billion inference operations per day, marking a significant 50% performance enhancement over its predecessor. The system incorporates 48 Spyre AI accelerator chips, with an ambitious plan to scale up to 96 within the next year.
IBM highlights that the z17 not only surpasses expectations in energy efficiency but also delivers a remarkable 7.5-fold improvement in AI acceleration efficiency, consuming merely one-fifth of the energy required by other platforms. The development of this cutting-edge mainframe spanned five years and incorporated invaluable feedback from over 100 customers, ensuring it meets the dynamic and evolving needs of the future AI market.
